Xbox vs. PS4

Story by Jay Maloney

November of 2013 produced two new high-profile gaming consoles, the Xbox One and the PS4. Both of these consoles had a large base of fans, but still they are arguing about which console is superior to the other. So… which one is better?

Both consoles are expensive, but the Xbox One nearly cracks five hundred dollars, with a release price of $499.99. True, the PS4’s starting price is $399.99, but that one hundred dollar difference is a big deal to many people around Christmas, when many of these consoles were purchased. Price remains one of the main arguments for the PS4.

Arguably, the biggest battle in what has been referred to as “The Console War” is the argument over which console has better graphics. It’s a close race, but technically, the PS4 wins again, with a 1.84 teraflop (a unit used for comparing computing speeds in computers) ability against the Xbox One’s 1.31.

However, internet connection gives the Xbox a clear advantage. It includes both newer and older bandwidths (electronic signal which transfers data to the console), which limits interference, something that is far more likely when connecting with the PS4.

So far, the PS4 seems to be on top and the better buy. Although the PS4 seems better, we now take into account the games available on each console. A large majority of this year’s popular games are available on both consoles this year, but some games are exclusive to each console. Games available exclusively on PS4 include “Infamous: Second Son,” and “Killzone: Shadowfall.” However, neither of these or many other of the PS4’s games have been highly heralded before its release. Some of the games released for Xbox, however, have been highly anticipated since their announcement.  Some of these games include “Forza Motorsport 5” and “Titanfall.” However, the new Halo game, “Halo 5,” will swing some buyers towards the Xbox all by itself. Some say the Halo franchise made the Xbox popular, and while no release date for the game has been given, Halo 5 will draw many buyers to the Xbox One.

In review, as far as what’s inside the console, the PS4 seems to be superior. However, you buy consoles to play the games that you like, and while many of this year’s high-end games are cross-platform and can be played on both consoles, only an Xbox will give buyers access to many of the games that gamers are looking forward to playing this year. So, after due consideration, the Xbox One is the best console for your money.
