Key club proves successful at district convention

Placer High School’s Key club, a community service club, has accomplished a lot in the last year. These accomplishments were awarded at their recent district convention.

Key Club is a community service club that does a lot of wonderful things. Some of the activities Key Club does to help the community are river and trail clean up days, a canned food drive in the fall along with a coat drive on the winter, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, helping out with the March of Dimes walk, and currently they are doing a book drive for The Invisible Children.

Although Key Club does a lot to help the community, that is not the only good that comes from it’s services.

“Key Club is a community service club, but it’s different than most because its international and social, you get to meet a lot of new people and make new friends,” stated Key Clubs president from the term that just ended, Kendall Odom.

Some Key Club members got the opportunity to be awarded for their club’s hard work and make many new friends at their recent big event, the district convention, or Dcon.

Dcon is a convention for all of the clubs in this district. The district includes all of California, Nevada, and Hawaii. Dcon is held at the end of every April because the key club term goes from April to April.

“My experience [at Dcon] was fantastic. I would have to say it was one of the best weekends of my life! My most memorable moment, were the intense spirit battles we had with schools all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii,” stated Abby Kendall, a junior who attended Dcon.

This year’s Dcon was held in Anaheim. There were a lot of workshops, a big dance, a concert, and the election of this year’s board. Placer High School’s Key Club also got the honor of winning 5 awards. The awards they won include membership retention, achieved increased membership, outstanding president, outstanding vice president, and most improved club in the northern California area.

“I thought [Dcon] was extremely beneficial to my success in the coming year as a board member. I think the dance was the most fun, because all 3,000 kids got together in one room. I also met tons of dedicated people,” said Placer junior Abby Myrick.

At this year’s district convention, Key Club’s hard work was rewarded and it was a great start to another year.
