Vintage Clothes

In the past few years vintage trends have slowly been finding their ways into today’s latest trends.

Many fashion fads from the 60s are very popular today. Babydoll tops, trapeze dresses, mini skirts, high waisted belts, wooden wedges, flower prints, large bags and leather accessories are all an influence of the hippie era of the 1960s. Not only were clothes light and airy, but by the late 60s everything was androgynous, with skinny jeans and the ability to dress as whatever gender you wanted.

Not only did the 60s influence the fashion world today, but so did the 70s. You can thank the 70s for platformed heels, which are a lot more comfortable than flat-soled four inch heels. Also, the 70s is responsible for the wide-spread spandex and lycra fever, leggings, hot shorts, it was all about showing off leg. The 70s was one of the least preppy eras in fashion. The hair was long and tousled and made to resemble surfer hair. The pants were long and belled, and the skirts were either super short or floor-grazing and elegant.

While the 70s may have been wild, so were the trends in the 1980s. All clothes, of both men and women were becoming more fitted. Women wore all Lycra, a thin tight stretchy material often used for leotards, dresses or skirts. The shorter and tighter, the better. Leopard print was all the rage, as well as big thick shoes, wide unfitted jackets, it was the decade of rebellion. Dr. Martens were extremely popular, along with tighter fitting jeans for men and dark hair and makeup for women. Any punk reference of today is taken from the 80s.

While the 80s may have been about punk, it quickly transitioned to grunge in the 90s with flannel shirts, thick shoes, slouchy jeans, and messy make up. Most high school kids in the 90s wore their favorite band shirts and bleached jeans. However, girls had 2 main styles in the 90s, preppy or grunge. Some of the girls liked to dress up more. High- waisted, short pencil-like skirts were worn, often paired with high heels and short-fitted jackets.

The beauty of today’s fashion trends is that almost anything is accepted. Throughout the years, people have pushed the boundaries of fashion and we still continue to. Many people are a lot more open-minded about showing skin or dressing to express their personality or mood.

The 21 Century is all about dressing to show who you are. Clothing has now evolved into a personal expression in a judgemental society . Many girls today have taken influences of old lace and patterns and mixed them together in new and modern ways. The 2000s are a decade of renewal and modernization of the old. When you walk around a city now you see many different styles walking down a street, all that originated from past decades of fashion.
