PDA feelings mixed on campus

Some people believe that over the years PDA on campus has become a huge issue. How is PDA affecting the learning space here at school?

At the moment Placer does not have any rules against PDA. PDA means public display of affection. Lots of students and teachers think that this should be changed, while on the other hand many people believe that the rules are fine the way they are. Madison Mohar, a freshman, states that “PDA is fine as long as it is not out of control.”

People have lots of different opinions on what exactly PDA is and when it has gone too far. Technically any kind of touching while in public is considered PDA “Hugging, holding hand, and small kisses goodbye should not be considered PDA.” said Alexis Heuer. While on the other hand, the second PDA was mentioned Grayson Hoffmann and Ryan McCormack started talking about how they hate it “It is so disgusting and gross!” Replied McCormack.

Heuer and Gwendolyn Conlee both agree that PDA is fine as long it doesn’t go too far and is timed right. They think that people have every right to kiss and hold hands during passing periods and social events. But if they are excessively kissing in the middle of class then they might need to take it somewhere private.

Some believe that PDA has different circumstances depending on the location. “You should not be making out in class or any professional environments, but during social events like football games and rallies it’s fine to kiss and hold hands,” states Conlee. This brings up the question of whether or not students should show affection in front of parents. Many parents don’t believe that kids should be doing any kind of PDA. Mohar believes that you should not attract unwanted attention and to be aware of who is around you, “If you wouldn’t do it in front of your parent then don’t do it in public.”

One thing that all of the students that were interviewed agreed on was that PDA over the past couple years has increased dramatically. Many parents and teachers are wondering why this is. McCormack stated “Kids are trying to be more mature and show off to the other students.”

Heuer thought that it might not just be due to people wanting to show off to one another, “It could be due to kids doing more bad things such as drugs and alcohol.” Lara Condosta, another freshman, thought that maybe PDA isn’t getting worse but we are just getting older. “People have always done it, we just didn’t notice it back when we were young, but now that we are older we started doing it.”
