Media reporting more shootings in national news

With fatal shootings on the rise, it’s normal for the media to report on such events, but in the last three months the amount of shootings in the U.S. has surmounted passed what any American would expect.

“Incidents of mass murder have gained considerable media attention, but are not well understood in behavioral sciences,” stated The Washington Post.

Obviously gun control has been the hot topic in the news lately, but one question arises, how far will the media go in order to sway the public’s opinion of how the gun control issue should be treated?

The U.S. has been consumed in a frenzy of concerned citizens, NRA supporters, families, and friends who have experienced the tragedy of losing a loved one to gun violence.

The sanctity of our 2nd Amendment rights is like beating a dead horse at this point, the topic of gun control has been circulating since the Sandy Hook Elementary and the reelection of President Obama.

With no particular route as to which way this issue is headed, both sides, Liberal and Conservative have taken it upon themselves to take advantage of the public opinion.

“I believe that we should still be able to use guns for hunting, recreational work, and for our own defense, but in moderation,” stated Placer graduate and intern for Governor Jerry Brown, Colton Stadtmiller. Gun Control/ More shootings or media portraying it that way

President Obama chose students to act as an aid against the gun control issue when he presented the 23 executive actions to prevent assault weapon violence.

Many Republicans believed that the use of children to influence the controversy between our 2nd Amendment right and the right to protect ourselves so soon after the Sandy Hook shooting.

Employing children into one’s speech against a heated topic allows for the speaker to avoid hard hitting questions and impact how the nation will decide to vote on the issue.

“The media is owned by wealthy business people who do have opinions and agendas of their own,” reported www.RealityCheckers.com.

It’s not the media’s job to protect our views, it’s their duty to reverberate stories, biased or not. The hard part is whether the viewer is willing to listen and take into account that there are two sides to every situation, sometimes even more.

Right Wingers produced a video in December of last year targeting Obama’s children, Malia and Natasha, stating that they are allowed the privilege of having armed guards with them at school while the rest of the student population is limited to this protection luxury.

The video went viral on YouTube, but the Conservatives view on how schools should be protected was irrelevant due to the fact that the president’s daughters are entitled to the protection of the Secret Service.
Shortly after the Sandy Hook shootings, news stations seemed more concerned with reporting the gruesome facts because of the effects of gun violence rather than informing the public on how they can protect themselves in such a situation.

“The media isn’t really informing us on how to act if something happens or how to protect ourselves,” stated freshman Molly Yurdana.

Broadcasting stations such as Fox news have been known to be more conservative, whereas NBC, the Good Morning America channel, has been more commonly turned to for a liberal approach to the news.

OnTheIssues.org reported that, “My belief is that we have to enforce the laws we’ve already got, make sure that we’re keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, those who are mentally ill,” stated President Obama.

Good Morning America has been an ally to Obama’s executive orders to control gun violence, by making it more difficult for gun owners to compete in gun shows, purchase firearms, and conducting background checks.

On the Conservative side, The New York Times published, “Using executive action to attempt to poke holes in the Second Amendment is a power grab,” said Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa.

No matter what station one chooses to turn on, it’s impossible to escape the bantering of gun control and the cries for more security at schools, shopping malls, and parks.

It takes a lot of monetary action to make things like full time school guards possible, with a slump in the economy and an unresolved 2nd Amendment debate, the U.S. has no authorization or funds to support areas in need of more protection.

Newspapers, news stations, and magazines are out to spark a reaction, to inform readers and viewers by filling their minds with side stories, biased opinions, and skewed witness accounts.

By watching both sides of the issue and reading articles written by left and right winged authors, one can make a sound decision without being manipulated by biased opinions.

“Each side I believe has their own flaws, but until we address the growing case of gun violence nothing will change,” said Stadtmiller.
