The warm days of summer have come and gone, fading into the colorful season of fall. Colder weather means warmer clothes, and with the introduction of jeans and sweats back into fashion and rainy days becoming the norm, people are looking for new ways to keep warm. There is going to be a hairy situation at Placer High School, as “No Shave November,” or NSN, plagues the campus.
Junior Ashley Noder is a supporter of the month long event, and said, “It’s just a way to stay warm in the winter. Who needs coats?”
The origins of this phenomenon remain controversial, but some believe No Shave November started as a competition between males to see who could grow the most facial hair during the month of November. The rules? No shaving, trimming, cutting or waxing.
Over time, women became more involved, and nowadays it is more of a gender neutral event, both sexes competing to see who can grow the most body hair.
Senior Joseph Ballesteros, who is participating in NSN agreed, “It’s for real men.”
While some students will look at this event and think of it as more of a joke, other students aren’t as supportive. Junior Hannah Kintzle stated, “For girls it’s disgusting, but for guys it’s not that big of a deal.”
Many will agree with the statement made by Kintzle as they feel that it is wrong for girls to go a whole month without shaving. Women are encouraged as well as men to participate in this month long journey, but this leaves a large number of the male population sickened by the hairy armpits, legs, and arms supported by the ladies on campus.
Junior Tyler Graves is one of the many guys who thinks it’s unpleasant when girls take part in NSN. He stated “That’s disgusting. Absolutely repulsive.”
Ashley Cook, junior, said that she would not go a whole month without shaving because she “like[s] clean cut.”
Weather you do it for the ladies or to compete with your friends, or demonstrate your manliness, No Shave November is sure create a furry situation at Placer. Don’t forget about don’t shave December, just don’t shave January, forget to shave February, must not shave March, and absolutely no shaving April. By the time spring rolls back around, your beard should be the best at Placer.
