Many Harry Potter fans have mixed feelings about the seventh book being split into two movies. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One was released in November 2010 and part two will be released on July 15, 2011. Although some Potter fans are thrilled that Potter’s legacy will continue for one last movie others are outraged that the final book was dragged into a separate part.
For most of Harry’s fans it has been a long journey. We were with him when he found out he was a wizard, his life was a lie and who he really was. The true fans have grown with him. We anticipated what would happen next, mourned with him, celebrated his joy, felt his panic; and we endured his pain and his hardships.
For the more die—hard fans Harry was more than just a character in a book – he was our friend and fellow comrade in the war against defeating the Dark Lord Voldermort.
When the first movie came out we were overjoyed, but also worried. Taking a great book and turning it into a movie can be a delicate matter. There were worries that it wouldn’t live up to the book or that it could be a disappointment, even that the movie would be so terrible it will ruin the book.
The books became better known, and when J.K. Rowling’s final book came out and Harry’s story came to closure people waited in front of book stores everywhere to buy a copy.
However action packed and fun the movies are to dress up for the books are unquestionably better.
“The movies leave out vital plot points while adding silly parts,” stated senior Lauren Guevel.
As fans we have sat in the cold, dressed as characters from the books and waved hand whittled wands. We have wrapped our selves in blankets and stayed up into all hours of the night just to experience that magic – no pun intended – for the first time and then dragged ourselves to school or work on three hours of sleep.
Many fans are angry because the have to wait an extra eight months to see the ending of the tale started in November. To some that anger is justified, but what is eight more months compared to the fourteen years that have passed since the first book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was published in 1997?
“The seventh book has so many loose ends to tie up. Making sure all those loose ends are tied up keeps the fans happy, making more money off to films makes Warner Brothers happy, everybody wins,” stated senior Melody Yourd.
If you have read all seven books and watched the seven movies that have come out in theaters; if you have been with Harry since the very beginning, then what is the harm in waiting eight measly months in order to get a few more hours of the magic that J.K. Rowling created?
“If the book was just two hours or so, many of the points the book made a big deal of would have been left out, making the book incomplete,” said Guevel.
For those of us who grew up with Harry, and truly love him we are willing to wait eight more months to experience this magic. Now, instead of having seven movies to curl up on the couch with cauldron cakes and butter beers, we have eight! Although it is an excruciatingly painful to wait to see the finish of this great tale, we now have a few more hours of that magic to enjoy and cherish forever.
