Running for a cause

Throughout the year various endurance races and walks are held inCalifornia. Ranging from breast cancer walks to zombie runs, students at Placer took part in these exciting and thrilling events.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is an influential and moving event that unites the community to come together and honor breast cancer survivors. This program also raises our awareness on how to stay free of this unfortunate disease.

The event occurs annually, and this year, sophomore Kaylee Barry took part in this on Sunday, Oct. 21 in theSacramentoarea. After doing Relay for Life a community fundraiser walk that raise funds and alertness to save lives from cancer, with her friend and family, she wanted to get more involved in such events.

“My friend does it every year and they know the person who died and they do it to support that,” Barry said.

Making Strides raises money to support American Cancer Society and fight the disease in every way possible. The journey to end breast cancer begins with a single step; only a couple of hours out of ones day will bring a lifetime of limitless opportunities for people and families facing breast cancer.

The walk got Barry thinking of how lucky people are.

Like Barry, senior Laura Cerny took part in the event called Run For Your Lives 5k Zombie Run. This is a one of a kind 5k race filled with obstacle courses, escaping zombies.

“I saw this big crazy event on tour, and I’m a zombie fanatic. It looked like a blast, and an amazing experience,” said Cerny.

Her main goal was to survive, and throughout the race she couldn’t help thinking that she was going to “die”. According to Cerny, the participants had to constantly run sprints to stay away from the zombies. Also, throughout the course, there were many challenging obstacle courses that went as far as electrocuting you.  At the beginning, each player starts of with three flags, and to be considered “alive” the player had to end the race with at least one flag.

“All the people are in it together, and we work as a team,” Cerny said.

Senior Brian Wright also did a 5k race; luckily, his was free of flesh eating zombies. On Sunday, Oct. 28, he participated in the Merrell Down&Dirty Mud Run in Folsom. This event is sponsored by Subaru, and all the funds go toward military families acrossAmerica.

He heard of the event from a fellow friend andPlacerHigh   schoolstudent, Marlena Fajardo. Fajardo has been participating in this race for the past three years, and has been recruiting people to partake in the event with her.

This is Wright’s first time doing a 5k race. Wright is not an avid runner and failed to prepare for the race so the course was rough, but in the end said that it was well worth it.

“It’d be fun to challenge myself and do a 5k, and it’s always fun to get dirty,” Wright said.

Overall, these are just some of the many exciting and exhilarating races students at Placer are involving themselves in.
