More freshman athletes making the jump to Varsity level than ever before

From football to basketball freshmen have been pulled up to a varsity team than ever before.

Kapri Pelle who plays on the varsity volleyball team says even though there’s an age difference between us, the team is still very supportive and friendly. “When I first found out that I can play on the varsity team, i was scared that my playing time would change or the girls wouldn’t accept a freshman” Pelle added. Though the decision to leave her friends was hard, Pelle is now so glad she decided to play on the varsity volleyball team and says it is a great experience and a lot of fun.

There have been a variety of reasons why coaches have been pulling underclassmen up to the next level. Reasons have ranged from necessity to players just being that good

John Hilton added, “If they are coming up, they must be the best athlete in the position in the entire school”. Hilton believes that some freshmen are not mentally prepared for the physicality, speed, and size in the varsity level though there are some exceptions.

“I was really excited to play on the varsity team because i love to be challenged and play with older players”.  Said Andres Prieto on the varsity soccer team.

Ryman Crone on varsity cross country agrees that playing on a higher team is both exciting and a challenge.

“It takes a lot of hard work, but hard work pays off” Crone added. He enjoys being on varsity because they are role models and help him work harder to be a better runner.

Nearly all freshmen agree that playing on a varsity team is faster, more competitive, and a lot of fun. Though to some coaches they may be good but should be careful about injuries from the physicality of the older players.

Hilton believes that if he were to bring up an underclassman he would be sure to have an interview with both the parents and the student making sure that they are fully aware of the consequences of playing at a higher level.
