Placer students go against the odds for athletic scholarships

High school, college, and professional sports all have different levels of competition and the odds of making it to the top are slim to none.

The chances of making a team in high school are much greater as to the chances of making it in college and making it to the professional level are nearly impossible.

Statistically of the 100,000 high school seniors who play football every year, only 215 will ever make an NFL roster. Of the 9,000 players that make it to the college level only 310 are invited to the NFL scouting combine, the pool from which teams make their draft picks.

The odds of becoming a professional basketball player are almost nonexistent. The amount of high school students that make it to college level are 2.9% for men and 3.15% for women. Being that professional teams are harder, only 1 in 10,000 make it to that level and going from high school to professional is only about 0.2%.

For those striving to play baseball professionally the amount of people that make it from high school to professional is only 0.5%. From high school to college is 5.6% and college to professional is 10.5%.

Aside from football, soccer is one of the hardest sports to play and make it to professional. Only 0.08% of people make it from high school to pro, 1.9% makes it from college to pro, and 5.7% make it from high school to college.

Of the 47 students playing football at Placer only 3 were offered a full scholarship. There’s also a benefit to having college scouts look at a player because it gives other players a chance to be noticed.

“Eddie brought coaches that ended up looking at me.” Senior varsity football player Stone Sanders said.

Having one of Placer’s students Eddie Vanderdoes, representingAuburnat theU.S.

Army All-American Bowl, was just one example of how Placer has an advantage to the odds of succeeding. Although, we have just a few students getting scholarships it is more than most schools.

Eddie was offered scholarships by many colleges and decided on going to USC.

Many students attending at Placer have been offered chances and scholarships to play at the college level and all have made the effort to do their best to be noticed.

“I had to work really hard to get the attention of colleges.” Senior golfer, Hannah Gregg said.

Although most are surprised by these numbers, the chances of getting to the levels offered are almost not worth the time and hardship to get there, but for the students at Placer, that is not stopping them.
