Students treated to nutrition break after 1st period

Students are noticing that few things have changed at Placer High School this year. A few of the more noticeable changes being a nutrition break and a new cafeteria spot. Besides going to the cafeteria, students can now purchase lunch or get a snack in between first and second period at the Hillmen Bistro, which is located next to the auditorium.

Whether or not the nutrition break is useful or not is something people disagree on; however, one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that it’s simply too short. An extra three minutes have been added to the passing period between first and second period for the nutrition break, but it seems like three minutes just isn’t enough time to be useful.

“I could easily just bring food from home and eat it during passing period or class,” said Molly Barrett, who thinks the nutrition break is pointless.

Students Nicole Lundburg and Molly Barrett would rather have the three minutes be added to lunch and the nutrition break removed altogether. But the director for the district, Lila McAllister, thinks it is important because it gives hungry kids a chance to eat. Is three minutes really enough time to give those hungry kids a chance to eat, though?

McAllister feels it should be a solid ten minutes, so the kids can fill up and do better in class. All the other schools in our district have nutrition breaks, so many felt it was about time Placer got one also. Although many kids do use the three minutes to purchase a snack, some are unaware we even have a nutrition break, let alone another spot to purchase snacks and lunch.

“We have a nutrition break? And a new cafeteria spot?” asked student Nicole Lundburg in surprise.

Yes, we have a nutrition break and a new cafeteria spot: the Hillmen Bistro. The Hillmen Bistro is located near the auditorium in what used to be a class room. You can purchase breakfast, brunch, and lunch at the Hillmen Bistro during both the nutrition break and lunch. McAllister thinks it’s conveniently located so kids on the opposite side of campus get a chance to eat. However, she believes it’s not advertised enough and if you don’t know it’s there you probably wouldn’t notice it.

Many students say they would be more likely to purchase food during the nutrition break if a few changes were made.

First and foremost, almost everyone can agree that it needs to be longer. Some students also believe it would be more productive later in the morning, between second and third period because that’s when they’re hungry. Moving the nutrition break to in between second and third could be more beneficial because more students would be more likely to purchase food then.

So, if you were unaware, keep your eyes pealed for the new Hillmen Bistro during the nutrition break.
