Ditching class seems like a fun thing to do with your friends, but is it worth your future?

Some kids have confessed their story of where they go when they ditch and what they do. Is everyones hypothesis of what they’re doing true? Are kids really ditching to go smoke, meet people, or just leaving because they think they don’t have a future in education?

Placer high schools vice principal Mr. Camminti answers that  “I think any absence, even if its a legitimate absence it affects, any time you’re not in school you’re missing instruction”

According to Mr. Cammniti you have 48 hours to excuse your absence or else its is considered a cut. Out of Placer highs students the attendance rate is 96-95% every 8 weeks. In Mr. Camminti’s opinion he believes that when kids cut they either stay on campus or leave school.

He also said that “Some kids just stay on campus, and they’re walking around or they’ll go try and stall and go see their friends”

Mr. Camminti thinks that when kids leave class early that they’re going to starbucks, to meet their friends, go and get food early, or just plain walk around.

A Placer high sophomore Gracie Jolley says that “ It just depends on the type of people you hang out with and what class you’re in”. She thinks that kids shouldn’t ditch if they are doing something in class, but if they’re just sitting around or watching a movie its ok. She has confessed that she doesn’t ditch class, but might if they’re not doing anything. “ I wouldn’t ditch unless I could get away with it”. In her opinion people who ditch are going to get food or smoke.

Ms. Spears Placers agriculture teacher who deals with about 2 students ditching all the time says that she has “Usually none, but this year I have two” students that cut her class.

“If you miss a day you’re done.”(Spears) Some kids don’t understand the importance of if you miss class you miss the instructions and are behind which affects your grade. When kids cut Ms. Spears class she doesn’t chase or send people after them but just call the office and let their grade suffer.

Some kids think that missing a class such as an elective or

Placer freshman Natalie Madrigal says that “They miss out on curriculums that the teacher is teaching, and it will soon affect their grade.”

She believes that kids who ditch are missing out on what the teacher is saying and what everyone else is learning about. Most kids in her class don’t really ditch that often but at least one student will ask to go to the bathroom and won’t come back until class is over.

With about 1345 students at Placer high about 50% of them will cut throughout their 4 years. Some students would actually leave class or school, or some kids would miss school and be counted as a cut for not calling and clearing the absence. Thats about 672 students for each 4 years that grade attends.
