Some students pushing the limits of “public display of affection”

Some high school students have gotten a little too com- fortable with the idea of sexual intercourse and where they “get cozy”. There have now been a couple rumors and sightings of high school students having sex on campus. So when did the idea of having intercourse be- come so relaxed?

There used to be concerns about what outfit to wear to impress your boyfriend or girl- friend, but now the question floats around the school about which condom is the best. With that, the respect for one another in some high school relation- ships has slowly gone away.

“Teenagers don’t understand how bad they’ll regret it in 10 years when they actually find someone they love,” said sophomore, Baylee Vanderdoes.

Recently after a school rally, a freshman asked a friend for a condom because he wanted to “get some”, and while he could be joking and trying to show off for his friends, there is so much disrespect that comes from that comment. It is rare these days that you find a high school relationship that agrees they like to enjoy each other’s company while having clean, innocent fun. According to studies from Advocatesforyouth. com, it shows that 46% of high school students are involved in sexual activity and that if you look at just seniors involved, it is around 62%.

“We don’t really have a set policy on PDA, but we don’t mind hand-holding or hugs, it’s when the “make out sessions” begin thats when we make com- ments. It makes others uncom- fortable and does not need to be part of the Placer education- al standards,” voiced assistant principal, Kim Barry.

Here at Placer, there have been students having intercourse in their cars and in campus bathrooms before and after school hours. Some parents found it astounding that kids could get away with something like that at school.

There was a discussion among parents, and most parents agreed that you can’t stop high school students from having sex, but there is a point to where it needs to be stopped for the respect of the school and students.

“Not  only  is  that  showing disrespect to your name and school, but that is crossing the line of public display of affec- tion  and  public  indecency,” said Sharon Sherman, grand- mother of a Placer student.

Although the issue has in- creased with high school stu- dents, it has sadly made its way into middle schools. ABC News recently did a story on middle school students involved in sexual activity. They surveyed many   students  and  found that girls are feeling pressured to have sex. They say that the boys make them feel like they are something special to them, but in the end they get tricked. Surveys from ABC News also showed that girls are getting ridiculed more so than the guys. It showed that girls get the “bad” reputation at school, while they guys don’t get as much judg-ment.

“Guys get the high fives, while girls get the glares,” stated freshman Cassie Ramirez.

So  where  did  the  respect for a relationship go? Has it always been like this or are people getting too comfortable in todays’ society? A relation- ship shouldn’t be based off of the best condom they used, it should be revolved around the care for each other.
