S.T.A.R. Testing Preview Day

Once again Placer High School will be having a preview day this year for the STAR Test leaving many students with mixed emotions.

Initially there was no plan to have a preview day at Placer High School yet after a staff meeting some teachers felt like having a preview day would permit students to do well on the STAR Test.

Preview day will fall on Tuesday April 19 2011 after spring break. Originally preview day was supposed to occur the week before spring break yet some teachers found this to long of a stretch and that student’s will forget what they just reviewed.

Preview day allows students to refresh on the subjects that they had first term. For some students those subjects were core classes such as Math or English, which require going over. With preview day hopefully the risk of not doing well on the STAR Test will be tapered.

“I feel like we should have a preview day because a lot of people had academic classes last term and we aren’t going to remember a lot that was taught and we are the ones who will get into trouble if we don’t do well on the star test.” Stated junior Allison Alvarez

Many students feel strongly about having a preview day and when hearing that Placer High School will be having a preview day they were thrilled.

“I feel we need a preview day for those who had important classes last term such as math and English. Most people don’t remember everything they learn. Without the preview days some kids may have a hard time on the test,” said sophomore Ashley Massa.

However there are always those who see this continuation of preview day as a waste of student’s time.

“I feel that preview day is kind of pointless. All we do is sit in our old classes,” says sophomore Madeline Udall.

Will having a preview day affect Placer High School’s 2011 STAR Testing results? Or will the student’s of Placer High School not do well even with this day to review last term’s subjects? With the threat of government reform looming on Placer High School, will this decision to have a preview day make this alarming threat a vague reality?
