Shull Patrol

All students have seen Leonard Schull at some point or another around campus. Shull is a veteran campus monitor who has been at placer for 20+ years. He previously had worked for the 49ers during the summer in administration and ran a dormitory. Whether he’s checking in on a class or driving around in his golf cart. Some students have dubbed it “Schull Patrol.” Student opinion on Schull is mixed. Some feel he is making a positive impact at Placer, while others feel he is not needed.

“I actually feel like we need him; but sometimes he overreacts” said junior Cody Meikle. Whether or not Students like him, he plays an important role at Placer, keeping students safe, and legal. This year, joining Schull is newcomer Tyler Shelgren. Shelgren is a Marysville high school graduate, who previously worked as a correctional officer in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado for 6 months. Student opinion on Schull is varied. Some feel he is making a positive impact at Placer. “I actually feel like we need him; but sometimes he overreacts” said junior Cody Meikle.

Whether or not Students like him, he’s undeniably a positive force. Being a campus monitor is “unlike anything else in the world.” says Shull. “You see the good and bad sides of young adults.” Both Shull and Shelgren agree the best part of the job “Is working with good students and interacting with the staff” Shull also acts as stand in counselor, but prefers to leave it to the professionals. The least enjoyable part of the job is having to search a student’s backpack. The best case scenario is a false alarm. The worst case is actually finding something. Most of their time is spent patrolling in the golf cart. Most of the issues they deal with are minor. They mainly focus on keeping students in class, and upholding the California Education Code and School rules and preventing students from engaging in harmful behaviors.

“We have a good rapport and positive dealings with most students; most students who upset are more upset with their situation then with us.” In fact, non-students makeup the majority of the serious problems on campus. Being here for 20+ years hasn’t phased Shull, who plans to stay for indefinitely. “I’ve never given a thought to retiring. Not once.” added Shull. As for Tyler, he’s unsure as to how long he’ll be at Placer, but plans to re-attend college to finish several classes.

Shelgren says the most challenging part of the job is dealing with students with difficult situations and hearing about personal troubles. But, Tyler likes “Working with kids, helping with issues, and doing good things.” Not surprisingly, Shull and Shelgren, hear more than enough gossip. “We hear a lot from the business owners and community, not just the students. Whether or not students appreciate Leonard Shull and Tyler Shelgren, the good they do, cannot be ignored.
