The Sacramento Kings are all but extinct. They are all but ready to
officially become the Anaheim or Los Angeles Royals, readopting their
former name from the days in Kansas City.
The team has gone through a win drought in the past five or so
seasons and have slowly lost their talent from the glory days and the
franchise is ready for a change of scenery.
Sacramento was once home to a team that was feared throughout the
league and was a contender for titles every season from the late
nineties till the early years of the last decade. They featured a star
studded team led by the great forward Chris Webber and backed up by a
supporting cast of players including Mike Bibby running the point and
many others that helped them go far in the playoffs. The Kings were an
elite team and ran into the seemingly unbeatable Los Angeles Lakers
which featured the combination of Kobe and Shaq and they were
unstoppable for Sacramento. One of their greatest and most memorable
playoff series’ was in 2002 when the Lakers won in a game 7 in Los
Angeles with a Robert Horry 3 pointer at the buzzer for a one point
win and trip to the NBA Finals. That series is highly controversial
due to the possibility that a referee working the series was betting
on games and certain calls were fixed for a Lakers advantage. That
series was one of Sacramento’s best opportunities to get a Finals
appearance and it was so closely missed.
What has followed from that era is simply forgetful.
Since the glory days the Kings are nothing more than a Lottery team.
Basically they have been one of the worst in the league for too many years. They got
rid of all their great players in a time that I would say is before
the end of their prime. One great example of this is Mike Bibby. Bibby
is a very good, experienced point guard that is now with the Miami
Heat seeking a ring before it is time for him to retire. Bibby along
with many others have been traded out of Sacramento for players in
return that have shown no promise and some of those players are
already gone.
The front office has made some decisions that did not pan out quite
as planned. Every team has this, but the Kings have an amount that is
far too many. Geoff Petrie, the current General Manager of the Kings
hasn’t quite been the best. Neither have the coaches that he has hired
and quickly fired. It is almost impossible to remember the coaches
that have been in Sacramento since Rick Adelman departed.
The team drafted Tyreke Evans and thought they had found their
franchise player who would lead them to the playoffs, they were wrong.
Evans is simply not the type of player that Derrick Rose or Dwayne
Wade is. He is on a lower tier. This most recent draft the team
selected Demarcus Cousins who had red flags in the maturity and
emotion department. Those flags have shown with flying colors. Cousins
has gotten into altercations with teammates and the opposition both
resulting in disciplinary action. What are the Kings thinking?
The Maloofs did not bring the Kings to Sacramento and they never had
any intention of keeping them here. First it was talk that the team
would be heading to Las Vegas where the Maloofs have their Palms
casino, next it was an arena in the Sacramento rail yard or downtown.
It has now reached its final act. Rest in peace Sacramento Kings
(1985-2011).
