From bunkers to ghosts, Placer is rich in its history

Placer High School is full of rich history dating all the way back to 1897, the birth of our school. Many students have no idea of the historical events, sites, or people that have crossed our campus.

One site is the well known and talked about Cold War bomb shelter near the weight room.

“It’s very tiny. When people were worried of attack, they just wanted to be covered,” said Placer teacher of 36 years, Ron Hyatt.

According to Hyatt, the small area could hardly be considered a bunker, but more of a storage room. He suggests that anything underground would have been able to protect people and the shelter near the weight room was just one of many on campus.

“Everyone who works here knows that it’s been down there forever. It’s not like it’s a newly discovered thing,” Hyatt stated.

According to Hyatt, the shelter has now been cleared up, due to students causing a ruckus with the supplies.

Scott Barry remembers playing in other underground areas as a child as well.

“We used to try to sneak down there,” Barry said.

Barry has had a long history withPlacerHigh School; his dad was a teacher, he was a student, and now he is a teacher. Barry also claims that the shelter has been cleared and is now being used as storage. The Cold War shelter has certainly received a lot of talk throughout the years but it is not the only historic topic. The Earl Crabbe Gym and the auditorium have also been noted historic.

“I think that gym is haunted,” Barry stated.

There have been many reports of mysterious sounds late at night in the Earl Crabbe Gym. Barry has reported that he has heard people running in the bleachers, late at night, multiple times. When he tried to catch a glimpse of who it was, there was no one there and the lights were all out.

“The first few times I was scared, but after, I just wanted to see if I could see them,” Barry said.

Many may think this is strange since the gym is not even a century old; however, according to Barry, one theory is that people return to places of happiness after they pass. High school is the best four years for many people and many of those good times are spent in the Earl Crabbe gym.

From bunkers to ghosts, Placer High School has accumulated a rich history and hopefully, students today will also leave a mark on Placer High School’s book of history.
